To be honest, when I first started drawing, as a young man, I wasn't that good at drawing people, so I decided to become really good at drawing backgrounds to distract from that fact. I found that I was a natural at drawing backgrounds, since my brain is able to process 3 dimensional objects better than most, so backgrounds were easier to draw for me than most.
